How are cataracts treated?
In most cases, cataract treatment initially involves nonsurgical measures to delay progression and improve your eyesight. This may include measures such as:
  • Wearing sunglasses outdoors
  • Having regular eye exams to monitor progression
  • Updating your eyeglasses or contact lens prescription
  • Using bright light when reading
  • Using a magnifying glass for close-up viewing tasks

If your vision progressively worsens despite these measures, for example, if you’re having difficulty driving, reading, or doing other normal daily activities, your Todani Eye Center provider may recommend cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is a procedure that removes the lens — the part of the eye that lies just behind the iris and pupil. The lens focuses light, so a healthy eye lens allows you to see clear and sharp images. When you have a cataract, the lens grows cloudy and prevents you from seeing well.

Todani Eye Center offers the most advanced type of cataract surgery: laser cataract surgery. In this procedure, your surgeon uses a state-of-the-art laser to create a precise, tiny incision. They use special tools that pulverize the cataract before removing it using gentle suction. After removing the cataract, your surgeon positions a new lens to replace the old one.

Your new intraocular lens (IOL) restores your vision, correcting your eyesight just as glasses or contact lenses do, but they do so from inside your eye. There are two main categories for IOLs. Standard IOLs Standard IOLs contain one prescription. So, if you have just one eye issue, such as myopia (nearsightedness), a standard IOL may work well for you. However, many people with myopia also have astigmatism (overly curved eye cornea.) And, most people over the age of 40 have presbyopia (poor focus at close distances) alongside their other vision issues. For these reasons, premium IOLs that can handle multiple eye issues at once are often the first choice for lens replacements today. Premium IOLs

Premium IOLs can correct your vision in several ways. There are a broad range of premium IOLs available today, including toric lenses for astigmatism and multifocal lenses to correct vision at all distances. A newer option in premium IOLs is extended depth of focus lenses, which give you one elongated focal point (versus several with multifocal lenses). These lenses are specially made to improve depth of focus, so they can minimize glare and halos, both problems that people with presbyopia may experience with multifocal lenses.
