Retina Care Q & A

What does retina care involve?

Retina care involves comprehensive eye exams to diagnose and treat issues affecting your retina, the thin tissue at the back of your eye responsible for sending and receiving images. Todani Eye Center uses the latest diagnostic tools for evaluating retina problems. The providers also help you understand your treatment options and find the best approach for your retina care needs.

Many people with dry eyes also experience frequent eye watering, which is your body’s automatic response to discomfort and dryness. But eye watering isn’t the same as healthy tears — it lacks the oil and mucus layers that provide moisture and lubrication.

Todani Eye Center offers retina care for several conditions related to the retina, including: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) AMD affects the macula, the middle part of your retina that controls central vision. There are two types of AMD: dry and wet. With dry AMD, people have drunsen (tiny yellow deposits of lipids “fatty proteins”) within the eye. It causes your macula to thin over time, leading to a gradual decline in your central vision.

However, wet AMD occurs when you have abnormal blood vessel growth in the tissue layer beneath your retina. These blood vessels may leak blood or other fluids into the retina, causing vision problems. Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) Branch retinal vein occlusion causes blockages in the smaller branch veins that carry blood away from your retina. The condition typically doesn’t cause pain. In most cases, people with BRVO experience a gradual loss of vision over several days. Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO)

Central retinal vein occlusion can affect eye drainage, causing a blockage in the main retinal vein (where blood flows out of your retina). Diabetic retinopathy causes your retinal blood vessels to gradually weaken, bulge, or leak into your retina. It can lead to visual impairment such as black splotches (floaters) or blurry eyesight. Retinal tear and detachment A retinal tear occurs when the vitreous (jelly-like substance inside your eye) begins to tug at your retina. Without proper care, a retinal tear can lead to retinal detachment. Retinal detachment is a serious condition. Once the retina detaches, it no longer receives the oxygen-rich blood it needs to support it. Flashes and floaters While eye flashes may appear as fireworks or lightning streaks in your field of vision, floaters might appear to you as spots or cobwebs.

Flashes and floaters tend to develop when the vitreous shrinks as you age. It contains fibers that attach to your retina and helps your eye maintain its round shape. When these fibers begin to pull away from your retina, it can cause vision complications like eye floaters or flashes. Your provider at Todani Eye Center can help determine the cause of your retinal condition and the most appropriate treatment path for your needs.
